Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps

Be Fair To Suppliers

Build relationships with organic farmers and producers to create equitable supply chains. Fair prices for farmers, living wages and excellent working conditions for workers, investment in communities, respect for land and people!

Our relationships with our organic suppliers are direct, local, personal, sustainable, tangible, and verifiable. It’s a way for customers to know that the products they’re purchasing will have a real and positive impact on the people and communities who make them. For us, it’s a continuation of Emanuel Bronner’s legacy. He wanted to change the world for the better with the label on our bottles. We want to do the same with what’s inside.

  • ·Building equitable supply chains.  Fair pay, good working conditions, loans and community development projects support small-scale farmers and local economies—regenerative agricultural techniques improve soil, yield!
  • Projects and partnerships Canaan Fair Trade in Palestine, Serendipol in Sri Lanka, Serendipalm in Ghana, Creation Biotech in India, Kwale Coconuts in Kenya—fair trade and organic sources for all Dr. Bronner’s main ingredients!

Numi Tea

Trade Certification

Fair Trade guarantees farm workers are paid a fair wage and empowers them to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities.

The community of workers at our gardens democratically vote to determine how Fair Trade premiums are used in their community. Fair Trade funds have been used for a range of programs including new roads, cooking stoves, mosquito nets, new schools, college scholarships, enhanced maternity benefits, onsite medical staff, and life insurance.

Fair Labor Verification

Fair Labor Practices & Community Benefits was created by Numi and SCS Global Services (SCS) in 2007. Fair Labor Practices is a continuous improvement program that focuses on the labor and workplace conditions in developing regions where ingredients are grown, as well as all steps along the global supply chain.

Fair Labor participants are audited annually by a
third party auditing agency for their compliance to the following standards:

Sustainable Agriculture: Organic Certification is a prerequisite for the FLP program, ensuring workers are safe from harmful chemicals.

Entire Supply Chain: Each step of the overseas supply chain is audited for verification.

Continuous Improvement: Year-over-year improvements are required, as opposed to a pass/fail standard.

The FLP program fosters direct partnerships and encourages brand holders to have a direct role in the social development of their supply chain. It is also complementary to Fair Trade Certification and can be applied to products and supply chains where Fair Trade Certification is not available.

If you are a member of an organization or enterprise who is interested in learning more about the Fair Labor Practices program, please contact The Numi Foundation at info@numitea.com

Fair Trade: What You Need To Know

What’s not to like about the phrase “fair trade,” right? Lots of you probably look for it when you reach for your morning coffee (or afternoon chocolate bar) because you want to support farmers in far-flung places.

But it turns out that seal of approval delivers much more than decent wages—it’s also a sign that what you’re buying is good for the planet.

At the most basic level, fair trade means a product was sustainably produced and environmentally friendly. All of the crops have to be grown in a way that conserves water, protects soil from erosion, and limits pesticides and herbicides. And (bonus!) they can’t contain GMOs. But pay attention! That doesn’t necessarily mean all fair trade products are organic. Fair Trade USA says they ‘promote’ organic methods, but only half of the certified imports last year were organic, so if that’s important to you, be sure to check the packaging.

So the earth definitely benefits from fair trade methods, but it’s people who see the most dramatic return. In regions where chocolate and coffee are produced, labor conditions are notoriously grim. The global appetite to for fair trade means local farmers are paid fair wages and can’t be subject to abusive working conditions. Plus, all fair-trade products have a “floor price.” No matter how low prices drop, fair-trade products have to be sold at a level that still supports farmers. This helps workers keep some of the profits for themselves—instead of falling prey to the greed of a massive corporation.

Cool, huh? Who knew that little label meant so much. If you’re fired up about supporting farmers—and the planet— check out a few of our favorite fair-trade certified foods, beauty products, and home goods at Thrive Market.

What Is Fair Trade?

It’s so much more than just fair wages

What we do and how we do it matters. Our ECOCERT Fair Trade certification guarantees that the farmers and producers we work with are getting our full support, and that’s so much more than just fair wages. They’re impacted on four levels:

Ethical – Producers are assured their goods will sell at a minimum guaranteed price. This guarantee means workers receive a fair wage

Social – Workers are guaranteed reasonable working conditions. Our support funds the producer’s community

Health / Environmental – We respect the natural resources of the environment as well as the health of the workers

Developmental – We foster a sustainable partnership that empowers our producers to find tangible and sustainable growth

fair trade is an invention of the conscious.
