World Water Day – Leaving No One Behind

“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, begins with LIFE. When we look at our planet and our bodies its without question that WATER IS LIFE. We are made of it, 60% of our bodies are water. The water that makes us isnt self generated, it’s consumed. Therefore, if the water we drink is toxic so will be our bodies and lives. That is why the united nations have reserved this annual observance of World Water Day. They also have highlighted it as one of their sustainable development goals.

Sustainable Development Goal #6 is crystal clear: water for all by 2030. By definition, this means leaving no one behind. But today, billions of people are still living without safe water – their households, schools, workplaces, farms and factories struggling to survive and thrive. Marginalized groups – women, children, refugees, indigenous peoples, disabled people and many others – are often overlooked, and sometimes face discrimination, as they try to access and manage the safe water they need.

How often do you take for granted the everyday conveniences of western society? In America, we have around the clock access to clean and safe drinking water. We grow up playing in it, drinking it down, and cleaning our bodies with it. In the past few years, the “water-wise” movement has brought some attention to this precious resource, giving us a renewed sense of its fragility and our wasteful habits. But to really get “water-wise” we need to educate those without clean water how to source, manage, and replicate safe drinking water systems. This is what World Water Day is all about. It’s about educating those in need and acting together to ensure everyone around the world has access to this unalienable right.

We want to highlight a company that is making waves of impact with their water initiatives. Our tri partner Numi Organic Tea has developed an incredible program called “Together for H2OPE”. Numi is bringing clean drinking water, and water education programs to their farming communities around the world. In Madagascar, they learned that their tumeric farmers were drinking from a contaminated river 3km away from their homes.

This one company in collaboration with their tea-loving consumers and the Numi Foundation have brought clean, safe drinking water to over 4,000 people across 13 villages. They have not only built wells for these villages but also have implemented education programs so that these farming communities are empowered to continue managing and creating healthy water. Their community-led education programs teach on hygiene, sanitation and well repair. Now with wells right outside their homes, each Malagasy family—and their children’s children—has access to clean water, and water education for the first time ever.
