lets break down all of reality right now into just two polarized ideologies for the sake of discussion.
Author Ayn Rand proposed a society where each individual was accountable and responsible only for the betterment of themselves. She furthered that a society in which this took place would yield a utopia where innovation and success surged and mankind reached its greatest heights. This is also known as egoism, for those taking notes for the quiz.
And in the blue corner, altruism, the antithetical ideology. Altruism proposes that if we are all concerned about each other’s well-being, we will naturally all be taken care of including ourselves, and therefore we will progress as a society and make our greatest strides. Think Star Trek II, “the good of the many outweighs the good of the one.”
Now, every history book in the world would offer evidence to the argument that we have been evolving from a society based on egoism to an altruistic one. Even the fact that we created “society” is evidence of the evolution of our altruism.
The problem we are experiencing now, the one that has plagued us throughout history, is that an altruistic society creates the perfecting hunting ground for a small group of egoists. Imagine a sub-Saharan watering hole brimming with innocent passive life, living together in harmony… like an all you can eat vegas buffet for the pride of hungry lions none of us saw looming on the ridge.
So, we’re here.
Half of us have engaged them in the stare. Half of us are still unconsciously sipping from the stream.
Ironically, there is an elephant in the room, a few actually. This is the moment that determines every moment to come after it. You could let the instinct of self-preservation kick in, try to survive, save those only closest to you, perhaps. You could weigh the odds, take your chances, maybe escape with a flesh wound that will heal…eventually. The result of either of those choices being a variable outcome left up to chance. The two fixed outcomes, however, are that there will be losses, and… they will be back.
It’s decision time because a spotlight just landed on the announcer from the Thunderdome, who on cue rings out, “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dyin’ time’s here.”
What are you going to do?
Answer: Get the attention of all the other animals, make them conscious of the situation, discover their individual skills and abilities, devise a plan, motivate, inspire, mobilize and defend.
If we the many, band together and turn away the looming threat of the few. We starve the predator together.
