YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW
Thrive Market is passionately committed to creating a world that is free of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. We believe everyone has a right to know what they are eating and what chemicals are used in the foods they consume every day. That’s why we have carefully screened our products to ensure we do not carry any GMO foods. We also focus on providing USDA Certified Organic options wherever they exist. Genetically Modified Organisms are prohibited under the USDA Organic guidelines.
We believe foods containing any genetically engineered ingredients should be clearly labeled. While the United States does not yet legally mandate the labeling of GMOs, we are committed to transparency about the products we sell on Thrive Market. Many of the foods we carry are certified by the non-GMO project and/or certified Organic by the USDA, which prohibits the use of GMOs.
IF YOU BUY FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKING CARE OF THE LAND, YOU’RE SUPPORTING THE FUTURE OF THIS COUNTRY. -Alice Waters, New York Times
A NEW STANDARD
Though maintaining a catalog free of GMO foods is difficult, we are excited to support a growing supply chain where there is more visibility, accountability and success in awareness of genetically modified crops. We hope that major corporations will begin offering the non-GMO products they sell to European consumers to American consumers. We hope that certified Organic & non-GMO foods will become the industry standard, not the exception.
A SIMPLE SOLUTION
Genetic engineering is an extremely important issue, and also one of the most complex issues. Tracing GMO ingredients with 100 percent accuracy is extremely difficult, as cross-pollination and seed drift can contaminate natural crops with genetically modified pollen. More than 70 percent of food sold in the United States contains some genetically engineered ingredients and we know how difficult it can be for shoppers to always take the time to find out what is in their food. At Thrive Market, you can trust that we will do our best to never sell GMO foods and we promise to make it right if something with genetically engineered ingredients should make it on to the site.
OUR VALUES MEAN EVERYTHING
WE NEED YOU
We encourage you to point out brands or products that you know or suspect may contain GMOs. If you see something worth noting, please let us by email at email@example.com. Thank you for your support, and your help in making sure Thrive Market is free of genetically modified foods.
WHY IT MATTERS
Every year, 80 percent of low-income families resort to buying food they know isn’t healthy just to make ends meet. Meanwhile, more than 23 million Americans today still live in “food deserts”—low-income neighborhoods without healthy food. This lack of access contributes to a number of illnesses, including: diabetes, heart disease, and more, costing our country hundreds of billions of dollars and compromising the quality of life for millions of people.
We work with nonprofit partners like Feeding America to distribute free memberships to the families and individuals they serve. We also allow people to apply for a free membership right on Thrive Market.
We offer custom educational content to our Thrive Gives members, from shopping lists to recipes to a 22-part video course about how to live healthy on a budget.
SPREAD THE HEALTH
Thrive Market customers have the option to donate a portion of their savings at checkout, and every dollar donated goes directly into the shopping cart of a low-income Thrive Gives family. Every month, our members donate grocery stipends for more than 1,000 families. We capture data indicating that these additional funds help our Spread the Health members lead healthier lives by helping them form new healthy habits.
We create and implement advocacy campaigns that help make our world a better place. The goal of Thrive Action is to inform and educate our members and the general public about policies that make a difference in their lives and inspire them to get involved in making change. Stay up to date on our advocacy efforts and help make a difference at ThriveAction.org .
